Mr. Grudin, meet Mr. Fenske. Mr. Fenske, Mr. Grudin.
Leafing through the May/June 07 Communication Arts this evening. Ernie Schenck's ad column sticks out because of one word: Fenske.
"It takes magic, ludicrous, fancy, blind-flying and something hidden from probably 99.7% of the people on earth to bring an audience what they don't know. It takes Mr. Wacko."
ā Mark Fenske
There's that frightening stuff again.
Thank god.
I had the privilege of spending an hour with Fenske at the Oak Room in Boston a few years back. Got to buy the man a few drinks after he'd thoroughly up-ended Arnold's creative departmentāpeople walking away from Mark's presentation, scratching their heads, wonderfully mystified. Yet, smarter. Better equipped.
I suspect the author Robert Grudin might concur:
"Restless, curious, playful, contriving, the innovative mind feeds on challenge and makes its home in the provence of mystery."
I wish I could bottle it, Fenske's ability to continually up-end stagnant creative processes. In the meantime, words will have to do.
