The truth
I love this instruction from 1938 by the writer and teacher Brenda Ueland:
“Because you are a human being all you have to do is to get out truthfully what is in you and it will be interesting, it will be good.”
And yet it is so hard to do!Have you heard what's inside this head?
Ueland’s next thought:
“Salable? I don't know. But that is not the thing to think of--for a long time anyway.”
I'm pretty sure I don't write my own truth most days. I've got this voice inside that really wants what gets typed next to be extremely salable. The problem is, that voice has no idea what actually is salable.
And yet, I listen to it. I am that crazy. That voice talks a lot about craft and cleverness and innovation and differentiation. Not truth.
Have you had the experience of meetings a radio personality face to face? The effect is especially true if they are someone you have listened to for a long time. Now you are reconciling this new face with an identity you know deep in your bones. So often, a dissonance occurs.
I wonder if the truth is that unfamiliar face or the comfortable voice.
Thank goodness for curiosity. And tomorrow.
1. Find what is in me.
2. Get it out.
3. Truthfully.
