MySpace to hold Presidential Primary
According to Michael Arrington at TechCrunch, "MySpace has more registered members than the population of Mexico. If it was a country it would be the 11th largest in the world. So while it may be a major marketing event for MySpace to say it’s holding a presidential primary next January, you can be sure the candidates will take it seriously."
Absolutely. This is brilliant stuff.
What better way to get younger people, historically less-inclined to go to the polls, to begin participating? There's also great value in "legitimizing" MySpace (or any online community) as a "real" community in the eyes of the electorate.
Arrington points out the flaws in a MySpace election—low threshold for validating accounts. But in the end, as with so much marketing, to the initiator goes the spoils.
